Work as part of a team to support the mission of the Kansas Geological Survey and the State of Kansas Data Access & Support Center (DASC). The Application Developer works collaboratively to develop, implement, and maintain automated procedures, web applications, web services, interactive mapping applications, and location-based services. Additionally, this position supports coordination, outreach, and training activities. An ideal candidate for this position is a GIS Developer that is organized, resourceful, self-motivated and has advanced knowledge of GIS technology. Position is contingent on funding. Telecommuting or hybrid work arrangement may be considered for the ideal candidate.

Kansas Geological Survey is a research and service division of the University of Kansas. The Kansas Geological Survey studies the geology of Kansas, develops new techniques for exploring and analyzing geologic data, and produces and disseminates maps, reports, and scientific papers. Technical support includes editing, publishing, and cartographic services and full-service support for a diverse array of computing platforms and software, GIS, and web applications. The KGS also houses and operates the Kansas Data Access and Support Center, an important source of state geospatial data. Salary, Employment Status, and Fringe Benefits:
Full-time position with benefits, subject to a six-month probation and annual performance reviews. Salary is $65,000 or greater, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Job Description

  • (40%) Work collaboratively to design information systems and applications in support of KGS and DASC-related applications.
  • (20%) Develop, implement, and maintain web-based mapping application, map services, and location-based services
  • (20%) Develop, implement, and maintain, and automated procedures
  • (10%) Support outreach efforts by attending meetings, conferences, giving presentations as necessary. Provide end-user support and training.
  • (5%) Participate in system design, technical architecture development, and maintenance of technical platforms and applications.
  • (5%) Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Position Requirements

  1. This position is considered hybrid, a combination of remote and on-site work as deemed by supervisor.
  2. WORK AUTHORIZATION: Based upon fund availability, the selected candidate will need to meet all employment and work authorization standards/requirements to hold a position in the United States at the time of appointment.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in computer science, geography, geology, earth science or related field.
  2. 5 years of professional work experience in web site design and web application development using HTML, CSS, ColdFusion, PHP, JSP, ASP, Oracle APEX, or similar technologies.
  3. 5 years of professional work experience with SQL databases (e.g., Oracle, Oracle PL/SQL, DB2, SQL Server, or MySQL), including a working knowledge of SQL.
  4. 5 years of professional work experience with JavaScript, AJAX, and JS libraries (e.g., Dojo Toolkit, ArcGIS API for JavaScript, jQuery, intercooler.js).
  5. 3 years of professional experience developing or working with web services (e.g., REST, SOAP).
  6. Strong communication skills. Written skills will be evaluated by quality of application materials and/or published materials. Oral communication skills will be assessed by the interview and through reference checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Five years of professional work experience organizing and maintaining a web site of significant complexity that includes distribution of technical publications, automated and scheduled tasks, reports, presentations, and archived data.
  2. Five or more years of professional experience with an object-oriented programming language (Java, C++, etc.)
  3. Five years of professional work experience with batch-processing scripts using batch files, shell scripts, Perl, Python, or similar scripting language.
  4. Experience with web-based GIS application development
  5. Experience with responsive web design.
  6. Experience with the geosciences relevant to oil and gas industry, and/or water resources.
  7. Experience writing technical documentation and developing training materials.
