Symposium Spotlight
30 Years of MAGIC!
Did you know we are turning 30??? But we still feel like teenagers, each and every one of us. Being a member of MAGIC and attending the Symposium is guaranteed rejuvenation! But why? What's the story of this 30 year old non-profit who has stuck together for so many years?
MAGIC was formed to provide a forum in the center of the country for academics and government employees from originally 6 states, now grown to 9, to share work and best practices. Kansas University served as an early sponsor and we moved around a little throughout the years but spent a great deal of our time hosting in the Kansas City area...and now here we are in Omaha, NE!
"Build once, share often" became a resounding theme over time because it was the ingrained philosophy of the culture of MAGIC. Data development, data acquisition through partnerships, and data dissemination through state clearinghouses became the norm as we matured with, and literally built, a large part of the geospatial infrastructure.
MAGIC works through state and regional coordinating bodies and is focused on applications in the mid-continent region. Coordination and cooperation take center stage as GIS moves from back office to front office as people integrate GIS into all components of governments.
The typical MAGIC volunteer is the sort of person who loves GIS technology and wants to promote it as a means of improving life on this planet. We keep up with the latest geospatial tools, who's using them and who's in the best position to discuss them in a public forum.
Join us and maintain our tradition to reach our next milestone. And, don't forget, you can save a bundle if you register by one week from tomorrow!
